Motion Smoothing Explained

When you watch a 24fps movie on a 60Hz or 120Hz TV with "Motion Smoothing" (or TruMotion / Auto Motion Plus) turned on, the TV's processor invents completely new frames to fill the gaps between the real frames.

Because the TV has to guess what the pixels should look like in a fraction of a millisecond, it often creates "halos" or ghosting artifacts around fast-moving objects. Filmmakers universally recommend turning this feature off.
