Negative means subtitles appear early. Positive means they appear late.

Why Drift Happens

If a subtitle file was timed for an American NTSC release (23.976 fps) and you apply it to a European PAL release (25 fps), the video plays slightly faster than the subtitles expect. This creates a "drift" where the subtitles get progressively further out of sync the longer the movie plays.

A simple offset delay will not fix drift. The subtitles must be re-timed (stretched or compressed) to match the new framerate.
